MS CARNELL (continuing):

I look forward, Mr Speaker, to working with every member of this Assembly. I know my colleagues in the Liberal Party feel exactly the same way. This is a very exciting 31/2 years, running into the next century and into a new millennium - a time when, I think, every one of us is very lucky to be in the position that we are in.

LEADERSHIP OF THE AUSTRALIAN LABOR PARTY

MR STANHOPE: Mr Speaker, I ask for leave of the Assembly to make a statement relating to the leadership of the Australian Labor Party.

MR STANHOPE: I would like to inform the Assembly that the Australian Labor Party has chosen me as its leader.

MR MOORE: Mr Speaker, I seek leave to make a statement.

MR MOORE: I wish to inform the Assembly that I shall be taking my seat in this Assembly as an Independent member.

MR OSBORNE: I seek leave to make a short statement, Mr Speaker.

MR OSBORNE: I wish to inform the Assembly that I will be taking my seat as an Independent member for Brindabella.

MR RUGENDYKE: Mr Speaker, I seek leave to make a statement.

MR RUGENDYKE: First of all, I would like to congratulate Ms Carnell and Mr Stanhope on their respective appointments. I would also like to inform the Assembly that I take my seat as an Independent. I am deeply honoured to be able to do so. I advise the people of Canberra that I am here to work for the people of Ginninderra and Canberra. I also notice that there are representatives of the surrounding region present in the gallery. I advise them that they have my full support in making the whole of the Canberra region the greatest place on earth in which to live, work and succeed.
