The elected members made and subscribed an oath or affirmation of allegiance.

The Chief Justice retired.

The Clerk: Standing order 1(d) provides that the Assembly shall now proceed to elect a Speaker.

MS CARNELL: I propose Greg Cornwell as Speaker of the Assembly and I move:

That Mr Cornwell be elected Speaker.

The Clerk: Does the member accept the nomination?

MR CORNWELL: I accept the nomination.

MR OSBORNE: I propose Bill Wood as Speaker of the Assembly and I move:

That Mr Wood be elected Speaker.

The Clerk: Does the member accept the nomination?

MR WOOD: The member does not accept the nomination. I will explain why. There has been both too much and too little said about the position of Speaker - too much speculation and intrigue, but too little consultation. Of course, the position is an attractive one, not just for the additional income. As a member for nine years now and as one who respects the forms of this Assembly and its achievements, I would consider
