QUESTION No. 1304

Contaminated Sites Register

Mr Moore - asked the Minister for the-Environment, Land and

 Planning

(1). Has a register of toxic sites in the ACT (including

 contaminated sites from sheep dip, arsenic and

 dieldrin) been compiled.  -

(2) If so, what procedures have-been adopted to treat these sites: '

Mr Wood - the answer to the Member's question is. as follows:

(1) A fist of former sheep dip sites is being developed in consultation with the ACT community. There is also. information available of former landfills announced by the then Minister for Urban Services in 1992 and' information on other 'sites such as. the site.of theformer service-station in Bunda Street, Civic. This information will form the basis of a comprehensive database of information about .contaminated sites in the ACT . . . . , ' .

(2) where preliminary testing of a site indicates a level

-of contamination which requires further investigation.,

the site-will be further assessed andmanaged in-.. with the

joint Australian and New Zealand

Environment and Conservation Council and National Health and Medical Research Council Guidelines for the Assessment and Management of Contaminated Sites.
